We get used with the Word of God. We leave the church as we came. Nothing penetrates our heart anymore. We start to joke about God and even to take in vain His name. We become more and more anemic Christians. The temptation is getting bigger and bigger and has more effect on us. Our faith depreciates and we do not actively believe that God has real power. Why does it happen?
I am afraid of this answer . We can not blame the Devil. He had his fault all the times. But what really matters is what I and you do. This is what draws us away from such a wonderful God and a close relationship with Him.
I have a little paper here, in front of me and i says: "this year do something special " I want to do something exquisite this year. I really do! I know that God sees my desire, but at the same time my weaknesses.
Here is an example of how someone got in such a grade that God would not talk with or to Him anymore:
6 Saul prayed to God, but God didn’t answer
—neither by dream nor by sign nor by prophet.7 So Saul ordered his officials,
"Find me someone who can call up spirits
so I may go and seek counsel from those spirits."His servants said, "There’s a witch at Endor."
8 Saul disguised himself by putting on different clothes.
Then, taking two men with him,
he went under the cover of night to the woman and said,
"I want you to consult a ghost for me.
Call up the person I name."9 The woman said,
"Just hold on now!
You know what Saul did,
how he swept the country clean of mediums.
Why are you trying to trap me and get me killed?"10 Saul swore solemnly, "
As God lives, you won’t get in any trouble for this."1 Samuel 28
Soul got in the position to swore on God for a thing that God does not approve with - talking with the dead .
I pray that I would never get in such a position. But this is not just praying. Saul prayed too. I have to take Saul as an example not to follow. Saul gradually turn his back to God . For Saul the first step was fear , the fear that the people would leave him alone and because Saul defied God’s appointment :
8 Saul waited seven days,
the time set by Samuel.
Samuel failed to show up at Gilgal,
and the soldiers were slipping away, right and left.9-10 So Saul took charge:
"Bring me the burnt offering
and the peace offerings!"
He went ahead and sacrificed the burnt offering.
No sooner had he done it than
Samuel showed up! Saul greeted him.11-12 Samuel said,
"What on earth are you doing?"Saul answered,
"When I saw I was losing my army from under me,
and that you hadn’t come when you said you would,
and that the Philistines were poised at Micmash,
I said, ‘The Philistines are about to come down on me in Gilgal,
and I haven’t yet come before God asking for his help.’
So I took things into my own hands,
and sacrificed the burnt offering."13-14 "That was a fool thing to do,"
Samuel said to Saul.
"If you had kept the appointment that your God commanded,
by now God would have set a firm and lasting foundation
under your kingly rule over Israel.
As it is, your kingly rule is already falling to pieces .
God is out looking for your replacement right now.
This time he’ll do the choosing.
When he finds him, he’ll appoint him leader of his people.
And all because you didn’t keep your appointment with God!"1 Samuel 13:8-14
What really helped you staying close to God?
