Yes, you are true. I totally agree on the reasons you mentioned. When I said that 40D is too big and that this is a disadvantage I meant just portability, that it is harder to take with me, everywhere I go a bigger camera. Actually I wait for the 50D. There are more advantages in favour of 40D: accessories compatible with 5D, low noise on high ISO, CF slot, 2 handy dials, magnesium alloy body, etc. Anyway, for an beginner, you made a good choice.
